What do ya'll think about this guy's advice here?

I did some fact-checking on his Wikipedia page, and yeah, he was on welfare once. But he graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree and then immediately went to work for a bank as a derivatives trader. which, I did more digging, and not anyone can become a derivatives trader, you have to know all about finance, and have to pass a Series 7 test.

I tried to find some interview where he talks more about how he became a derivatives trader, but alas he barely makes mention of it. He'll say "I was a derivatives trader and I learned this from it" or "I was a derivatives trader but hated it", but there's still this big mystery of how he decided on that job in the first place. I'm sure he didn't just walk down the street and get hit on the head by a falling job application and decide to sign his name to it!

From then on, he was lucky enough to work at rising two major rising stars: WinAmp, and then he went on to be a senior executive VERY early on at Facebook.

Overall, I think his success is mostly right-place/right-time and I think that's reflected in the prosaic nature of his recommendations here.

We as a society overvalue the opinions of people who were lucky. Luck should be a red flag.

"I think that we elevated a few people and created archetypes out of them and said 'everybody needs to be like them otherwise you're a failure'. And 'them' was prototypically some dude in their mid-20s to mid-30s who frankly more than anything else worked very hard, but also got exceptionally lucky in a moment in time. And we tried to institutionalize luck to everybody else and a lot of people fell for it. And a lot of people as a result chose the path of trying to get lucky, even when it meant working on things that didn't matter to them, or creating short-term economic stress on their family. And it turns out, in a moment like this (the COVID pandemic), that was really fuckin' stupid" - Chamath Palihapitiya
